Your labs came back normal. Your diet is clean. You've tried the supplements, the protocols, the gut health programs. And you still don't feel like yourself.
As a naturopathic doctor in Bend, Oregon, I see this every week. Women who have done everything right, whose bloodwork looks fine, and whose bodies are still clearly asking for something.
In naturopathic medicine, we don't stop at "your labs are normal." We look for the root cause, and that includes what's happening in your life, not just your lab values. Here are five signs I see again and again when a woman's body is holding on.
1. You know exactly why your symptoms started, and you're still stuck
You've read the books, listened to the podcasts, maybe taken a training or two. You understand the mind-body connection. You can name the season of life when your symptoms began.
And nothing has shifted.
Understanding something and resolving it are two different things. Insight lives in the mind. Healing has to happen in the body too.
2. Protocols help, for a while
You start a new protocol and feel better for a few weeks. Then the bloating, the fatigue, or the skin flares come back, sometimes worse than before.
When this happens, it often means the groundwork wasn't there yet. A protocol can quiet a symptom. It can't change the conditions that created it.
3. You do everything right, until you don't
Weeks of moderation. Clean meals, early nights, no sugar. Then something flips, and it's wine and cake and "forget it."
That swing isn't a lack of willpower. It's often a sign your body and nervous system have been holding on so tightly that eventually something has to give.
4. Your gut never fully settles
Chronic bloating. Sluggish digestion. The feeling that nothing is really moving. Food reactions that seem to change week to week.
Gut symptoms are some of the most common unexplained symptoms I see in women, and some of the most frustrating, because they so often show up with normal test results.
5. You can't hear yourself anymore
Maybe you've lost touch with your intuition entirely. Or you hear that quiet inner voice, and you talk yourself out of it every single time.
This one doesn't show up on any lab panel. But in my experience, it's often the most important sign of all.
Why the body holds on
The way I see it, the body doesn't hold on by accident. Symptoms are messages, not malfunctions. Often your body is protecting you from something it hasn't been safe to process yet, or holding space for something you haven't been ready to hear.
This is where root cause medicine goes deeper than chasing symptoms. Conventional medicine treats the symptom. Many functional approaches look for the root. In my practice, I also look at the soil: what made your body a hospitable place for these symptoms in the first place.
I call this the Untamed Medicine Method™. It brings together naturopathic medicine, mind-body work, and your own story, so the changes you make actually hold.
Sometimes we need a reset
Not another protocol. A slowing down. An intentional return to your body's natural rhythm.
For generations, women have helped their bodies clear with simple tools:
Bitter herbs to get digestion and bile moving
A day of rest from digesting, with water or broth
Nourishing broth and whole foods to rebuild
When the body clears, the inner voice gets louder.
That's the idea behind Bitters & Broth, a 7-day gentle cleanse I guide in community. It's not a boxed detox kit or a harsh fast. It's a simple, supported reset you can return to again and again. Every participant completes a short health intake first, and a fast isn't right for everyone, so please talk with your own provider if you're pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition.
